What’s New in Alberta this Winter

Winter is coming in Alberta! The mountain towns of Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper – home to the distinctive ski resorts of Banff Sunshine Ski Resort, Lake Louise Ski Resort, Mt. Norquay Ski Resort and Marmot Basin – are all set to open for the winter 19/20 season soon!

First to open will be the resorts of Mt. Norquay and Lake Louise on 1 November, while Banff’s Sunshine Village will open the following week on 8 November. Along the stunning Icefields Parkway, opening day at Marmot Basin in Jasper National Park is targeted for 23 November.

The four resorts boast nearly 10,000 acres of skiing, two gondolas, 33 chairlifts and 30 feet of feather-light dry Canadian Rockies powder annually.

Here’s what’s new in Alberta this winter:

THE GLACIER VIEW LODGE REDEFINES AN ELEVATED STAY

Pursuit Collection has unveiled an all-inclusive high alpine experience set amongst the dramatic backdrop of Alberta’s Columbia Icefield. A stay at the premium Glacier View Lodge begins with a welcome reception and evening glacier tour with canapes and cocktails on the ice. Guests then move indoors for a three-course gourmet dinner featuring locally sourced cuisine at Altitude Restaurant, followed by entertainment and stargazing on the expansive outdoor patio. The experience then concludes with breakfast and private access to the Columbia Icefield Skywalk, a fully accessible, cliff-edge walkway that leads to a glass-floored observation platform extending 918 feet over the valley.

ALL NEW SCENIC SNOW CAT EXPERIENCE AT CASTLE MOUNTAIN
At Castle Mountain Resort you now have the chance to climb aboard their Powder Stagecoach and take part in their all new 12-seat Scenic Snow Cat Experience. Whisking you high onto Haig Ridge, guests will enjoy hot chocolate and snacks at the top of the world amidst stunning alpine vistas. This non-skiing activity can be enjoyed by all – just be sure to wear warm clothing for the chairlift ride up to meet the cat. Priced from $89.95 per adult, the experience runs on Saturdays from 28 December 2019 to 16 March 2020.

INTRODUCING MALIGNE CANYON ICEWALKS
Beginning on 13 December, visitors to Jasper National Park can explore Maligne Canyon this winter on one of three newly-introduced daily ice walks. The Early Bird, Midday and Night Owl tours each offer participants the chance to explore an enchanting maze of natural ice sculptures, ice caves and towering frozen waterfalls. From a journey of exploration during the morning golden hour to a headlamp-lit evening adventure, each tour offers a different experience of this frozen wonderland. Experienced guides keep guests safe and comfortable in small groups (maximum size of 12) with warm boots, ice cleats and helmets included on all tours.
