Visitors to the Florida Keys & Key West can enjoy an alternative take on Halloween celebrations this October during the 18th annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest in Key Largo. Hosted by Amy Slate’s Amoray Dive Resort, the quirky sub-sea challenge takes place Saturday, 17 October.
During the event, scuba divers in two-person teams compete to craft artistic hollowed-out pumpkins at depths of 30 feet in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Prizes such as a dive trip are awarded to those who impress the judges by carving the most unique jack-o-lanterns underwater.
The entry fee is $85 per certified diver for the two-tank, two-location dive and includes tanks, weights, snorkel equipment and pumpkins. However, participants need to bring their own dive knives to use as carving tools. As space is limited, it is recommended that interested divers contact Amoray Dive Resort in advance to make reservations.
Travel to the Florida Keys: Departing on 15 October, America As You Like It offers a seven-night package to the Florida Keys from £1,015 per person including return British Airways flights from London Heathrow to Miami, seven days’ car hire, three nights’ accommodation in Key Largo at the Ocean Point Suites followed by four nights in Islamorada at the Siesta Resort and Marina. All accommodations are room only and the price is based on two adults sharing.
