Maryland’s Summer Bathtub Races

by | Jul 1, 2015 | Press Releases

Brits who’ve not yet booked a summer holiday and fancy the idea of a trip across the pond to the US East Coast should head to the state of Maryland to visit the town of Berlin in Worcester County. Voted ‘America’s Coolest Small Town 2014’ by Budget Travel, on the evening of the 17 July, Berlin will host its annual Bathtub Races.

Now in their 26th year, the bathtub races are a highly-anticipated event in the town’s calendar, but participation is not limited to local residents. The races are open to all, meaning that even holidaymakers can compete. While the bathtub vehicles come in all shapes, sizes and designs, there are a couple of important rules. For example, they must hold a minimum of two gallons of water and at least one rider, have brakes and steering, and drivers and riders must be 16-plus. Each team will need a driver, pusher and pit crew and the entry fee for visitors is $100. The team crowned victorious will take home the coveted ‘Winner Takes All’ trophy and gain year-long bragging rights.

Situated two and half hours from Baltimore, Berlin is a classic example of small town America. It has also previously caught Hollywood’s attention, as the backdrop to Julia Roberts and Richard Gere’s 1999-movie Runaway Bride.
