They grow them in greenhouses!
Yes, due to the pineapple’s need for tropical sun and warmth, the Azores grow these delicious treats in greenhouses – with 6,000 houses growing the fruit in over a span of 2 years.
And this growth is completely unique to the Azores! No where else in the world grows them in this manner. So, when the weather wasn’t good enough for whale watching, Jenni, David and their group headed to the Pineapple Plantations to find out all about Azorean pineapples.
At the plantation, visitors can see the 18 stages of pineapple growing, and sometimes even plant one themselves.
