Key Lime Festival Returns to Key West: 2-4 July

by | May 31, 2016 | Press Releases

One of the Florida Keys’ quirkiest festivals offers visitors the chance to taste a true Sunshine State culinary icon.

Tiny yellow Key limes have flavoured Florida Keys cuisine since the 1800s. Contemporary lime lovers can celebrate the indigenous fruit and the dessert it inspired – the island chain’s signature Key lime pie – during the Key Lime Festival which returns to Key West from 2-4 July.

Highlights of the tasty weekend include a Key lime pie–eating contest, cooking class, Cocktail Sip & Stroll and the opportunity to visit a secret lair containing ‘the world’s smallest Key lime pie’ – all washed down with samplings of Key lime rum, beer and cocktails.

Festival visitors can also tour the Key West First Legal Rum Distillery and taste its homemade Key lime rum, buy signed copies of ‘The Key West Key Lime Pie Cookbook’ and meet its local author David Sloan.

Believed to have originated in Key West in the late 1800s, Key lime pie was designated Florida’s official pie in 2006 by the state legislature. Its primary ingredients are condensed milk, egg yolks and Key lime juice, with the creamy filling typically nestled in a graham cracker crust and topped with whipped cream or meringue.

Bringing the foodie festival to a close is the Mile-High Key Lime Pie Eatin’ Contest at the Waterfront Brewery on 4 July, where competitive consumers can step into the ‘limelight’ and attempt to outpace their rivals by devouring an entire 9-inch pie, topped with mounds of whipped cream, without using their hands.

Following this event, a 4th of July Fireworks Picnic will be held at the Casa Marina Resort.
