Families looking for a sun and fun filled family summer holiday should visit the state of Maryland this summer. From an island full of horses to concerts on the beach, Maryland has something for the whole family to enjoy.
The National Aquarium in Baltimore is opening its doors to a new exhibit in Spring 2015 – an amazing experience for lovers of marine wildlife. This aquarium is a non-profit organisation protecting and preserving a plethora of exciting marine life, including dolphins, sharks and Great South American River Turtles. Children over eight will love the National Aquarium’s Dolphin Sleepover, an evening of kid-friendly meals, films, games and exploration. Excitable kids can join the experts in behind-the-scenes areas, sleep in one of the underwater viewing areas and help wake up the dolphins before the aquarium even opens. Prices for the National Aquarium start from $21.95, whilst the unique Dolphin Sleepover starts at $115.
Little explorers will also love the LEGO Castle Adventure Exhibit at Port Discovery Children’s Museum in Baltimore. Families can adventure through the royal castle on the search for secret passageways and the King’s throne, or look out for intruders in the lookout tower. The exhibit will be open from 14 February 2015 to 20 September 2015, and has LEGO and activities for all ages and abilities.
For those who love sand between their toes, Assateague Island National Seashore is a beautiful beach with a unique twist. With three hundred horses taking residency here, visitors will be able to spot these majestic animals on every part of the island. Explorers will love living alongside wild horses in the camping sites, as well as enjoying sightseeing cruises and trying their hand at crabbing and kayaking.
Close to Assateague Island is Ocean City, 10 miles of seaside fun. Aside from relaxing on the beach, families can take part in a vast amount of beach activities, including Beach Olympics every Tuesday from 6.30p.m. – 8.30p.m. – a great event with sand castle contests, a tug of war and relay races to name a few. Visitors with a sweet tooth will relish Sundaes in the Park, a concert located on Assawoman Bay with music and personalised ice cream sundaes every Sunday in July and August, or enjoy a quick jaunt along the boardwalk full of restaurants, amusements and arcades.
Located just a 30 minute drive from Ocean City is Salisbury Zoo, perfect for those who love nature and wildlife. Open 9a.m. to 4.30p.m. daily, this beautiful, lively zoo is the perfect place to while away the day and explore. Visitors will gaze in awe at the zoo’s plethora of exotic animals, all native to North, Central and South America.
