Experience two brand new wine trails within easy reach of Washington D.C. Visitors to the Capital Region can easily combine the delights of the city and its on-the-doorstep wine regions: Loudoun County, Virginia and Prince George’s County, Maryland.
Loudoun County, Virginia.
Less than an hour’s drive from the Capital, Virginia’s premier wine region is home to more than 40 wineries including Greenhill Winery & Vineyards. Visitors to Loudoun should be sure to explore the quaint historic towns of Leesburg and Middleburg boasting a growing craft brewery and farm-to-fork dining scene, DC’s Wine Country is not to be missed.
Visitors to the Capital Region can now sip their way across Loudoun County, Virginia with the new DC Wine Country Passport. The new wine passport makes it even easier to explore, offering exclusive perks at more than 20 wineries.
Drive along winding roads through the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and discover some of the county’s most unique offerings including Bluemont Vineyard which, at 951 feet, boasts enviable views of Loudoun’s rolling countryside. On a clear day guests can even see as far as the Washington Monument! Passport holders can also receive discounts and offers at; Boxwood Estate Winery, a National Historic Landmark and one of the oldest horse farms in Middleburg; scenic Breaux Vineyards; and The Wine Reserve at Waterford which boasts uninterrupted views of the Blue Ridge and Catoctin Mountains just minutes from downtown Leesburg.
Fancy something a little different? Loudoun’s LoCo Ale Trail continues to expand, with seven new breweries slated to open in 2018 making Loudoun County home to almost 30 breweries – the most for any county in Virginia. Visitors to Loudoun can also sample internationally acclaimed spirits from Catoctin Creek Distillery, notably Loudoun’s first distillery since the prohibition era who organically produce internationally acclaimed rye whiskey, gin, and brandy.
Prince George’s County, Maryland
Newly launched in March 2018 as part of Maryland’s official ‘Wine Month’ the Maryland Legacy Wine Trail celebrates Southern Maryland’s rapidly growing legacy as a premiere wine growing region. The Legacy Wine Trail is Maryland’s newest wine trail linking four wineries within easy reach of both Washington D.C and Baltimore.
Wineries included on The Legacy Wine Trail include; Gemeny Winery which serves world-class wines alongside seasonal farm-to-fork produce, Janemark Winery & Vineyard whose specialties include Gewürztraminer, a dry fruity white wine, Robin Hill Farm & Vineyards set on a renovated tobacco farm with historic wrap-around porch overlooking rolling fields and Romano Vineyards who are well known for their tasting room’s unique wine slushies and play host to jazz festivals throughout the season.
Maryland is also known for its craft spirits with notable recent openings including the Sagamore Spirit Distillery in Baltimore which specialises in rye whiskey.
DC’s District Winery
Start your wine trail in the city at DC’s District Winery. Recently opened in the heart of The Yards, a short walk from Nationals Park, District Winery is DC’s first urban winery. Visitors can now tour the property, sampling seven District Winery wines. Tours are priced from £26 per person.
