Tripadvisor users have voted Calvia, a municipality located on the southwest corner of Majorca, as one of the top 10 destinations to visit in Spain. The results were published in the 2014 Tripadvisor consumer travellers’ choice poll.
The region is home to six well-established resorts (Illetes, Magaluf, Palmanova, Peguera, Portal Nous and Santa Ponca), which are all situated approximately 20 minutes from Palma de Mallorca airport, which is only a two-hour flight from London Gatwick and other regional airports.
The region is transforming considerably, which is why large, upmarket hotel companies are choosing to focus their hotel development and marketing promotion on the region, and why celebrities are choosing to purchase holiday homes there.
In January 2014, Visit Calvia launched the Magaluf Revolution marketing strategy, which focuses on promoting the quality of the holiday experiences available in the region. With a number of new luxury properties opening, such as the ME Mallorca, as well as a wide variety of thrilling family attractions, the region is developing substantially and offering an authentic holiday experience far removed from the typical holiday associated with Magaluf.
It is no surprise that Calvia is one of the most popular and highly regarded places to visit in Spain, as the region boasts a vast array of stunning beach towns as well as a fascinating history. Homes and churches date from the 17th century and there are even the remains of a Roman villa.
With an average winter temperature of 15°, Calvia is also a hiker’s and cyclist’s paradise. Olympic Gold medallist Bradley Wiggins will actually spend a few months each year training in the region with other athletes, who all go to the area to use the abundance of luxury facilities and natural training areas.
