The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has just announced that Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park in the Canadian province of Alberta is Canadaโs newest World Heritage site.
The only UNESCO site to be named in Canada this year, it is Albertaโs sixth World Heritage Site, and its first in 24 years. The decision comes after the United Nations organisations, which is tasked with preserving the worldโs most important cultural sites, added it to its global list in July 2019. Albertaโs other UNESCO sites areย Dinosaur Provincial Parkย (1979),ย Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jumpย (1981),ย Wood Buffalo National Parkย (1983),ย Canadian Rocky Mountain Parksย (1984) andย Waterton-Glacier International Peace Parkย (1995). The designation recognises the โoutstanding universal valueโ of the park.
A refuge of spectacular badlands and hoodoos set amid the prairies of south-western Alberta, Writing-on-Stone, located near the town of Milk River, has been a hidden gem of holidaying Albertans for years. More than 60,000 people visit the provincial park each year to experience its breath-taking landscape and discover its rich history.
A sacred place for Indigenous Blackfoot people for around 4,000 years, the world has now been made aware of the unique place that isย Writing-on-Stone.ย Known as โรรญsรญnaiโpiโ to the Blackfoot community, meaning, โwhere the writings areโ, the site gets its name from the ancient rock art among its sandstone cliffs.
For generations, the park has been a sacred place for the Blackfoot people and other Indigenous groups of North America, and they believe the areaโs unique geological formations are the home of Sacred Beings, and their traditional knowledge describes the origins and use of the area which continues to be a spiritual place for Indigenous people today.
The petroglyphs carved into the rocks and the pictographs painted at Writing-on-Stone are testament to the siteโs cultural and historical importance. Some date back 2,000 years. There are 138 rock-art carvings in the park, depicting sacred people, spirits, battles, journeys and moments, giving it a tangible spirituality. Visitors can also see a fascinating array of new motifs, carved after European contact in the 1800s, including the addition of guns, horses and the presence of a North West Mounted Police barracks and a depiction of a Ford Model-T that has been traced back to a visit by a Blackfoot elder in the early 1900s.
For UK visitors travelling to Alberta, the park is a must see. Itโs geology, and specifically, eroded sandstone formations create some beautiful and bizarre sculptures making it a photographerโs dream.
The park includes a campground with severalย comfort campingย or glamping options, together with an interpretive centre that offers information on the areaโs culture and history. Located three and a half hours from Calgary, if not staying in park, visitors can opt to overnight in the city of Lethbridge which is just under 90 minutes away. The best way to see the petroglyphs is by taking anย interpretive walking tour, which will offer up information and stories about the parkโs fascinating heritage. A two-hour Rock Art tour is priced from $19 (around ยฃ11.50) for adults, $11 (around ยฃ6.65) for children aged 8-17, and $7 (around ยฃ4.25) for visitors aged 4-7. Under 4s enter for free.
Today, the Blackfoot people remain heavily involved in the preservation, maintenance and interpretation of Writing-on-Stone. Many are gratified to see its importance recognised by UNESCO.
โWhether youโre a spiritual person or not, as soon as you step out of your vehicle and immerse yourself in this landscape, you feel that energy,โ says Camina Weasel Moccasin, a Blackfoot who was first brought to รรญsรญnaiโpi as a child by her father, and later worked at the park as an interpreter. โIt means different things to different people, but everybody feels that connection.โ
