According to the press, the popularity of “gramping” continues to rise. If you are unfamiliar with this inappropriate term (a derivative of “glamping”, but without any discernible relation to tents), it refers to the practice of inviting grandparents on holiday in return for free childcare. They mind the kids while you go out for dinner, enjoy lie-ins, and, with a bit of luck, rekindle your neglected love life. An additional benefit is that the ‘oh so grateful’ grandparents often make a disproportionate contribution to the cost. And they always buy the ice creams. It’s the law.

So what do I think about gramping? Well, I could get all righteous and say it’s a selfish act, taking advantage of kindly, well-off grandparents. But, despite the slightly dodgy motives, in fact everyone’s a winner. Indulged (read ‘happy’) kids? Tick. Misty eyed grandma? Tick. Mum and dad having a proper conversation for the first time in five years? Tick. Bring me a large pina colada to celebrate. I’ll drink it in bed.

My own father-in-law adds another dimension to gramping. He provides little help with the kids. In fact I watched him not-interact with them for six hours in a row over the Easter weekend. But I love going on holiday with him because I enjoy his company. And because he fills the role of ‘the third man’.

Third Man (or woman) can be any relative or friend, but a single grandparent makes a good choice. Third Man can be sent ahead to recce restaurants. Third Man can keep Adult #1 company while Adult#2 has a siesta. Third Man can lay the table. Third Man can watch the bags while “important family memory” is made paddling in the sea. Third Man can take the photo.

Like many leisure pursuits, gramping also has an “extreme” version. One of my friends is taking her kids to Orlando this summer. If this weren’t enough of a mission, she has invited not only her parents, but also her parents in law. Imagine the argument potential in that scenario! Which park shall we visit today? Which ride next? Where shall we eat? What shall we eat? What time shall we eat? She can look forward to competitive present buying, heavily nuanced observations on her parenting, and polite disapproval from all four of them on her profligacy. Not to mention the consequences of septuagenarians volunteering to ride the Tower of Terror to gain the approval of a 10-year-old.

Extreme gramping should only be attempted by those highly skilled in diplomacy. As far as I’m concerned, when it comes to grandparents on holidays, one’s company, four’s a row.

Visit New England in early June and help to celebrate the 100th birthday of one of literature’s most inspiring creations.

The official Pollyanna Glad Day festivities take place on Saturday 8th June in the town of Littleton, New Hampshire. Held annually, this year’s celebrations take on extra significance as they mark the 100th anniversary of the publication of Eleanor H. Porter’s world-famous bestseller Pollyanna.

Littleton-born Porter created a character whose very name has become synonymous with optimism, cheerfulness and community spirit … and who is now represented by a jubilant bronze statue on the town Library’s lawn. Each day, visitors and passers-by make a point of returning Pollyanna’s ‘welcome wave’, with many also stopping to rub the statue for luck and gladness.

Visitors joining these quintessentially New England celebrations on 8th June will be able to take part in the annual welcome wave, group photo and cake-eating which has become almost a ritual in itself! To complete the experience, why not stay at historic Thayers Inn, which boasts its own recreation of Pollyanna’s bedroom?

Pollyanna of Littleton is just one of the delightful discoveries awaiting visitors in this beautiful riverside town, including a popular walking tour of the historic downtown area, a 115 year-old opera house, a decades-old independent diner and the unique shops along Main Street – among them Chutters, home to the world’s longest candy counter! Fine dining awaits at Bailiwicks while many visitors travel to the nearby town of Sugar Hill where Polly’s Pancake Parlor prides itself as ‘home of the perfect pancake’.

With its setting in the scenic White Mountains, Littleton is also the perfect base from which to discover more of New Hampshire’s attractions. Just half an hour away is the Mount Washington Cog Railway, the steepest railroad track in North America, providing spectacular views of New Hampshire, Maine,Vermont, north into Canada and east to the Atlantic, as passengers travel to the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington. The same area is also home to one of New England’s best-loved resorts, the Omni Mount Washington Resort, with a range of sports and outdoor activities available.

For more information on Pollyanna and the town of Littleton, visit www.golittleton.com/pollyanna.

Virgin Holidays has seven-night fly-drive holidays in New England departing 5 or 6 June from £620 per person, including economy class flights to Boston from London Heathrow and car hire, bookable at www.virginholidays.co.uk.

Who are we? What’s our background? And why should you trust us with your brand? We’re a mix, but most of us have commercial backgrounds, marketing qualifications, and have done our time in-house. Everyone receives proper training and you can be sure we won’t entrust your precious brand to the work experience guy. We are serious about what we do and we’ll never run our business on a shoestring so there’s always someone here when you call us up.

All our account execs and managers have at least two years’ experience. Some of us have loads of experience. Some of us are even over 40 and have worked in the industry for 20 years! But we think that’s a good thing. We don’t make rookie errors, we don’t suggest ridiculous ideas or throw money at fads. We’re not taken in by sales people, but we’re very good at selling – whether that’s a story to a journalist or an hotel to a product manager.

We deliver real, measurable results for our clients, increasing market share, generating bookings and creating awareness, all driven by our intimate knowledge of the UK leisure travel market. Take a look at some case studies in the Our Work section to see what we could do for you.

Project: Olympic Events for Slovakia

Client: Slovak Tourist Board

Task: KBC worked with the Slovak Tourist Board in July 2012 to help secure media and trade attendance at media and trade events at Slovakia’s Olympic House during the London 2012 Olympics. In total, we were asked to secure 185 attendees at 19 functions including media breakfasts, cookery shows, a fashion show and travel industry events presentations at the Institute of Directors.

Implementation:

With just 3 weeks to go before the first event, we knew we had to act quickly. KBC sprung into action, issuing invitations to hundreds of our key tour operators and travel, cooking and fashion media contacts. We utilised our excellent relationships with the media and the travel trade, and actively encouraged attendance by highlightingSlovakia’s unique appeal and stunning natural beauty. To guarantee an excellent turnout so close to the first event, we also reached out to the members of a number of organisations including The Circle of Wine Writers, Guild of British Travel Writers and the Guild of Food Writers.

We also used social media to promote the events on Twitter and LinkedIn and engaged the services of OTT to send out e-blasts to travel agents. A KBC representative was present at each event to ensure that everything ran smoothly, and to promote Slovakia’s stunning natural beauty and unique destinations including the 2013 European Capital of Culture, Kosice.

Results: KBC and the client were delighted with the results as we exceeded our target of 185 attendees by an impressive 47%, attracting 272 guests across 19 events. KBC generated a flury of media coverage around the event, with a number of journalists and bloggers featuring Slovakia and the cooking shows and fashion show in online and print publications. Feedback from the event was very postive with media and trade commenting on Slovakia’s natural beauty, unique fashion and gastronomy. Following the events, KBC also recieved a number of ennquiries from journalists who were impressed by the events at the IOD and were subsequently looking to write features about Slovakia or arrange a press trip. KBC’s social media activity around the events also attracted a lot of attention, with many of our tweets being discussed and retweeted by key travel and food media using the hashtag, #SlovakHouse.

Anna Hyman, The Foody Traveller.

I have a suspicion that an ear to ear smile of pleasure didn’t once leave my face yesterday. I loved the event, it was just fantastic. And I actually felt as if I had also learnt a fair bit about the country too. I can’t thank you enough.

Give the kids something to brag about this May half term! From spotting wild whale species and wild dolphins, to cycling to volcanoes and experiencing the magic of colourful festivals – you’ll find it all in The Azores, less than four hours direct from London Gatwick.

Holy Ghost Festival
As the landscapes of the Azores come alive so do the towns, cities and people. The islands’ most important religious festival, the Holy Ghost Festival, takes place this year from May until mid June. Each week throughout this period, special gatherings and processions of flags, drums, musical performances, traditional dancing, singing, and occasionally parades and fireworks take place in towns, cities and villages across the archipelago. Celebrations often reach a peak on the last of the seven Sundays after Easter (19 May 2013). Travellers will receive a warm welcome as stewed meat, sweet bread, and scented wine are typically distributed to visitors as part of the festivities. Ceremonies on the island of Terceira typically take place in brightly decorated chapels, called Impérios, while festivities on São Miguel can take place in the streets and attract a large number of visitors.

Whale watching, scuba diving and swimming with wild dolphins
The waters of the Azores become a classroom of excitement this spring offering world-class whale watching and the chance for lucky travellers and children to spot the king of the whale kingdom, the majestic Blue Whale, as it passes through the archipelago on its annual migration, as well as the resident sperm whale, and 25 resident and migratory species. Adults and older families can also swim with wild dolphins and go scuba diving to see colourful and striking pelagic fish, manta rays and blue sharks in the spring’s warmer waters. Varieties of dolphin include Atlantic, Common, Bottlenose and Spotted dolphins. After a full briefing and if conditions allow, people are able to enter the water from a low level boat to swim with the dolphins in their natural habitat – a rare experience.

The Azores – an adventure playground
Experience the natural world like nowhere else – the Azores are the ultimate adventure playground for families. Ideal for younger families, take in imposing volcanoes, breathtaking lakes often situated in ancient volcano craters, and dramatic terrain scattered with tranquil waterfalls, hot springs and steaming fumaroles by bike on a family paced cycle adventure. Enjoy walking, hiking and horse riding or mountain biking, canoeing, sailing and even paragliding for the more adventurous.

Geological, volcanic wonders and thermal spas
This spring the landscapes of the Azores will be decorated with colourful flowers and lush landscapes. Introduce inquisitive minds to the wonders of island geology where travellers can touch, see and smell natural phenomena including volcanoes, volcanic rock and thermal spas. Gaze at collapsed calderas and their beautiful lakes, walk through Fajãs, see the volcanic ridges and formations left behind by recent eruptions, discover the underground world by descending into caves and walking into lava tubes, or watch bubbling hot springs.

Inexpensive local produce- cooked in a Volcano!
From food aficionados to fussy eaters, even the cuisine of the Azores is fun, and better yet inexpensive; a coffee, soft drink or beer can set you back just one euro. Sample simple but mouth-watering produce including the local cheese, pineapples, bananas, guavas and passion fruits. Those with experimental palettes can savour local dishes, including delicious and freshly caught squid, clams, tuna, swordfish, limpets, crabs and one of the most famous dishes from São Miguel island, ‘Cozido das Furnas’, a traditional stew which is cooked underground by the heat of a volcano! Containing local sausage, beef and a variety of vegetables, this is a hearty family meal. The Azores also boast delicious local wines and a fragrant Azorean tea produced in local tea plantations in São Miguel.

The Azores offer a wide range of affordable accommodation including modern and traditional hotels, farmhouses, villas, hostels and campsites with direct flights from London Gatwick on SATA International between April and October. Taking less than four hours, straight to Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel, and with only one hour’s time difference, it’s really convenient for families.

As Iron Man returned to UK cinema screens for the third time last Friday (26 April 2013), Marvel Comic Fans and Superhero fanatics alike can visit two exciting attractions dedicated to the fantasy characters in the city of Baltimore, Maryland.

Journey through the history of American pop culture in media, toys and comic characters as it shaped children in both entertainment and education at Geppi’s Entertainment Museum. The museum’s collection is the representation of the vision of its founder, Steve Geppi. The museum is dedicated to the proposition that comic characters – whether entirely fictional or based on figures from real life – have played a hugely successful role in the entertainment and education of children, and in turn that this has played a huge factor in their lives. www.geppismuseum.com

Just a mile-and-a-half from Geppi’s Entertainment Museum is The Jewish Museum of Maryland. The museum is currently hosting ZAP! POW! BAM! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books, 1938-1950, which features superhero memorabilia, original comic book art, and video interviews with the creators of superheroes, offers visitors an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the Golden Age of comic books. www.jhsm.org
